The United States Postal Service (USPS) assigns mailing addresses based upon the post office which serves an area. Mailing addresses do not always indicate the actual city limits that an address is within for local tax purposes. If you are a register voter, the city in which you vote for elected public officials (such as mayor) is your city of residence.
As a courtesy, The State of Ohio Department of Taxation provides a “Lookup By Address” link on their web site which can be used to validate the Ohio municipality that an address is located within for local tax purposes.
Click here to validate an address by typing in the address information, and locating the “Municipality Name”. In the event the municipality name has an “N/A” displayed, this indicates that the address is likely within an unincorporated area (i.e. township) and no municipal tax applies.
As the Ohio Department of Taxation states at the bottom of the “Lookup By Address” results page of your search: “Please note that if you feel there is an error or have questions regarding the information you have received, please e-mail the Department of Taxation at TheFinderHelp@tax.state.oh.us. Please refer to the reference number XXXX-XXXXX displayed on this page.”
If
you performed a “Lookup By Address” search and
it did not produce a result or you would like to
confirm the result through another government agency, you may go to the
respective county auditor web site that the address is within and perform a real
estate/property search. In most cases, the county auditor will provide the
municipality information. Below is a list of links to county auditor web sites:
Contact
the respective county auditor directly for assistance navigating their web site.
In the event you were unable to validate your address thru the “Lookup By Address” and county auditor web link, please contact RITA if the mailing address city is a RITA member city. If the mailing address city is not a RITA member city, then please go to www.columbustax.net and click on the “Tax Municipalities” link to locate the city contact information that can provide you with an address validation. As a courtesy, the City of Columbus Tax Division provides municipality contact information for all municipalities within Ohio. Please do not contact the Columbus Tax Division unless they administer the tax for that municipality.
